As Creative Director, I was tasked with developing a comprehensive brand identity for Wake Skincare, a new entry in the natural skincare market targeting busy individuals seeking effective, refreshing products for tired skin. The project encompassed brand strategy, visual identity development, product packaging design, and creation of marketing assets for multiple channels.
The Challenge
In today's saturated skincare market, Wake needed to carve out a distinctive niche that would resonate with consumers constantly exposed to screen time and environmental stressors. The brand required a cohesive identity that would:
- Communicate rejuvenation and refreshment as core brand values
- Appeal to primary demographics (25-45, primarily female) and secondary demographics (18-24, mixed)
- Establish clear visual differentiation from competitors
- Create a consistent experience across all touchpoints
- Emphasize natural ingredients and sustainable practices
The Approach
Discovery & Strategy
Our process began with identifying the target market: urban and suburban professionals experiencing the effects of a constantly connected lifestyle on their skin. We recognized a gap in the market for products specifically addressing "tired skin" with refreshing, natural solutions.
Key insights that guided our strategy:
- Consumers desired simplicity in skincare routines despite complex needs
- Natural ingredients and sustainability were non-negotiable values
- The experience of "refreshment" needed to be communicated across all brand touchpoints
- The brand voice needed to balance factual, scientific information with approachable warmth
Brand Messaging Development
We distilled Wake's core mission into a clear statement: "WAKE was born out of the need to stay refreshed. Our skin care products are designed to rejuvenate and revitalize giving tired skin the refresh and glow it deserves."
The brand voice was crafted to be:
- Refreshing and youthful
- Modern and minimalist
- Friendly and approachable
- Factual and informative
Key taglines were developed to reinforce the brand promise:
- "Help Your Skin Rise & Glow"
- "Rejuvenate & Refresh"
- "Natural radiance in every person"
Visual Identity
The visual identity was built around clean simplicity with strategic color usage:
Logo:
A bold, sophisticated wordmark with "Wake" as the dominant element and "& Refresh" as a more delicate supporting element on specific applications.
Color Palette:
- Primary brand colors: Teal (#52C4CB) for CTAs and brand accents, Black (#000000) for text, White (#FFFFFF) for backgrounds, and Pink (#E62D92) for announcement bars
- Product-specific colors that correspond to different skincare formulations
Typography:
- Lato Bold for headers
- Twentieth Century Regular for body copy
Packaging Design:
Clean, white primary packaging with color accents corresponding to product types, creating a cohesive yet easily distinguishable product line.
Product Line Development
We created a strategic skincare system organized by:
- The Basics (essential daily products)
- AM/PM Routines (time-specific product recommendations)
- Skin Type Solutions (routines for oily and dry skin types)
Each product received unique but unified visual treatment through:
- Consistent packaging architecture
- Color-coding system
- Typography hierarchy
- Branded iconography (vegan-friendly, paraben-free, made in the UK)
Visual Asset Creation
Photography direction focused on three key categories:
- On-White Product Photography: Clean, properly exposed studio shots for e-commerce
- Styled Product Photography: Contextual shots featuring the products in use
- Lifestyle Photography: Authentic imagery of diverse models using the products
Digital Presence
The digital storefront and DTC website were designed with:
- Clear user pathways to build skincare routines
- Educational content about ingredients and benefits
- Streamlined shopping experience
- Consistent application of visual identity elements
Marketing Collateral
Marketing materials unified the brand through:
- Cohesive A+ and B+ content for marketplace platforms
- Social media templates (Instagram posts, stories)
- Email marketing templates
- Campaign concepts centered around "Rise & Glow"
Results
The Wake Skincare brand launch achieved:
- Strong visual recognition through consistent application of design system
- Clear market positioning as a refreshing, natural skincare solution
- Positive customer reception in UK and German markets
